The Sustainability Advisor is responsible for the implementation and improvement of all sustainability activities and obligations for the TasWater CDO Alliance Project. Specifically, the Sustainability Advisor is responsible for the sustainability function of the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project, with support from the Sustainability Team. The Sustainability Advisor will be responsible for developing and integrating sustainability strategies into project planning, design, construction, and operation, working closely with project teams and stakeholders.

Technical

  • Develop and implement the project’s sustainability management system including the Sustainability Management Plan, and monitor and report on performance.
  • Implement actions, procedures and tools that support the project to achieve the required sustainability outcomes
  • Implement, monitor and report on sustainability performance indicators, tracking progress and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Provide expert advice to project team on sustainability requirements and outcomes aligned with project requirements
  • Assist in delivering the Design and As Built Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) ratings
  • Undertake ongoing evaluation and enhancement of the projects’ sustainability performance
  • Collaborate with construction teams on sustainability management requirements to ensure that we meet our obligations and improve performance
  • Communicate key sustainability information effectively to internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in the education and engagement of internal and external stakeholders on sustainability issues and best practices
  • Assist with delivering sustainability toolboxes and workshops as required
  • Support Environmental Team at Selfs Point as required
  • Submit permits and approvals as required
  • Conduct site visits, environmental and sustainability, inspections and audits as required

Business Knowledge

  • Work within the Project Delivery Team to gain an understanding of TW CDO and the Water industry more generally.
  • Learn about the TW CDO business, the roles and responsibilities of each team through mentoring and supervision of senior, more experienced members of the Project Delivery Team, including your direct Supervisor.
  • Learn and adhere to TW CDO policies and procedures to understand the TW CDO culture and regulatory requirements.

Communication

  • Develop written communication through the preparation of documents, subject to projects undertaken and alignment with TW CDO processes.
  • Work effectively with the team to accomplish team goals, taking actions that respect the needs and contributions of others.
  • Communicate to the team policy and process changes as and when they occur.
  • Adjusting language or terminology to meet the needs and characteristics of the audience.

Teamwork

  • Advocate a quality culture that continually seeks to improve the quality of its products and services.
  • Establish clear communication, solid lines of control and delegation to sub-ordinates and actively create and maintain a culture of openness, responsiveness, honest, ethics and responsibility across the team.
  • Manage the selection and training of all team members, building a high skilled, performance focused, innovative, passionate team.
  • Conduct Performance Development sessions with all direct reports in line with Company policy including consequence management where required and developmental requirements aligned with succession plans.
  • Coach and mentor all direct reports on all aspects of their sustainability role, facilitating effective co-operation and trust, encouraging the free exchange for information, ideas and techniques between the various operations teams, leading and motivating them to be aligned to the same team goals and business objectives.
  • Address poor performance and inappropriate behaviour in a timely manner, taking disciplinary action where required within guidelines of CDO/UGL policies and procedures.
  • Ensure communication and consultation, with internal and external parties, of appropriate quality and document control information.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems such as job safety analysis, pre-work checklists and risk assessments.
  • Comply and have input into safe working procedures.
  • Report hazards, incidents and accidents within company guidelines.
  • Assist with safety sections for reports, tenders, and proposals.
  • Actively participate in safety training

Qualifications and education requirements

(Essential)

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience the construction industry including 1 year in a in a similar role
  • Degree in Engineering, Science, Sustainability or related disciplines
  • A strong understanding of sustainable construction principles, legislation and best practices
  • Proficient in developing and interpreting project related documents and preparing reports and monitoring compliance documentation

(Desirable)

  • Experience in a utilities and/or service industry
  • Experience in delivering sustainability rating tools such as Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) ratings.
  • Lead auditor training and/or experience highly desirable
  • Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) highly desirable
